about

Edit of "Dugu Kamalemba", combining dubby stabs, house drums and cutting electroid basslines. Free download. Club tested :)

"Dugu Kamalemba" (skirt-chaser) originally appeared on Oumou Sangaré's second album "Ko Sira" (1993). It is part of an ongoing life's work of feminist hymns that reflect the Malian singer's upbringing in poverty as the child of a mother abandoned by her husband. Many of Sangare's songs are about love and marriage, especially the freedom of choice in marriage. Her first album "Moussoulou" (1989, re-released in 1990) was an unprecedented West African hit. With her songs, she fearlessly campaigns for the improvement of the situation of women in Mali, propagates female independence and opposes polygamy, child marriage and a system that defines a "good wife" as a submissive woman.
